Symptom list
The most comprehensive vitamin B12-deficiency symptom list on the internet!
If you recognise any symptoms, make sure it's not a vitamin B12 deficiency. This is important because not only will symptoms caused by a vitamin B12 deficiency get worse over time, more complaints may develop as well.
Do you recognise 7 symptoms or more, than there's a good chance you suffer from a vitamin B12 deficiency.
A test treatment is advised.
Neurological signs and symptoms
- Cramps, tingling in feet and hands and later in legs, arms and face as well. "Feeling like there's electricity running through you", "there are ants crawling up my legs - it's driving me crazy". Also: a strange numb sensation in the hands and feet. Loss of function. Tremor of the hands.

- Hyperesthesia, nerve pain(neuropathic pain). Caused by damaged nerve endings. “Oversensitivity or overstimulation of the tactile nerve endings in (parts of) the skin, that can be tingling, irritating or painful. The cause can be located either in the skin (inflammation of the nerve ending for instance) or located more centrally”.

The patient complains about a stiff and heavy feeling in the legs. There is an unstable gait and muscle soreness is a lot worse than before. Leg pain while walking. There are often problems with fine motor skills as well (fastening small buttons or getting small coins from a wallet are difficult)
82
83
- Lower back pain

- Subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord, which is a damaging of the dorsal cords in the bone marrow and the pyramidal lateral cords. Sometimes the disease is paired with affected peripheral nerves. (Polyneuropathy) The disease is caused by a vitamin B12 deficiency. B12 is necessary for maintaining the myelin sheaths, the insulating layers around the nerve bundles. Damaged myelin sheaths (sometimes permanently) cause paresthesia symptoms. These are tingling sensations, "pins and needles" in the toes and the feet, and later in the fingers. Sometimes the tingling lessens during sleep, but after awakening it starts again.

- High sensitivity, because the entire nervous system is affected by a vitamin B12 deficiency: the soft fatty material (myelin) that envelops and protects our nerves is damaged (demyelination).
This is comparable to stripping an electric wire. It leads to all sorts of strange symptoms; tingling, pain in the arms and legs, etc., and also leads to extreme sensitivity to stimuli, sounds, light, moods and ‘energies’ of other people. Patients are very touchy, vulnerable, easily frightened. Also leads to greater exhaustion and irritability.

- Alzheimer's (including early-onset); a daily dose of vitamin B12 lowers the risk of early dementia and Alzheimer's by 30 percent, according to research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Researchers followed 1648 seniors between the ages of 65 and 90 over a period of 10 years. Vitamin B12 has the property to drastically lower a high and harmful homocysteine level. This decreases the amount of cardiovascular damage and brain damage with increasing age.

- Elevated homocysteine levels, as a result of a vitamin B12 deficiency. Homocysteine is a potentially dangerous amino acid. When homocysteine accumulates in the bloodstream, the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke and blood clots increases significantly. A high homocysteine level can damage blood vessels and help cause atherosclerosis with an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes (developed in a relatively short time). Homocysteine can also transform cholesterol into its harmful form, increasing the chance of blood vessels being damaged. It can also contribute to the disruption of the functioning of the endothelial cells (inside of the blood vessels). When pregnant, an elevated homocysteine level in the blood can also increase susceptibility to preeclampsia, a potentially dangerous complication of the pregnancy characterised by high blood pressure.

Remarkable: Vitamin B12 deficiency can also lead to:
- Abnormal PAP-smear results in women, a vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to blood anomalies.
These blood anomalies can affect the uterine wall and the cervix. Which can lead to abnormal cell production in the cervix (dysplasia).
These can incorrectly be diagnosed as early-stage cervical cancer.

601
- Severe menopausal complaints
602
603
- Increased risk of cancer, a vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to an increasingly large amount of damage done to the DNA and alters methylation of the DNA, both factors are known as important factors in cancer risk.
604

In babies and children
Symptoms listed below are also part of the overall symptoms list, but here references to research that has been done with regards to children are listed.
If a woman has a vitamin B12 deficiency, it is very likely that her baby will also have a vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 is passed on during foetal development and through the breast milk.
It is estimated that 2 to 5% of all children suffer from a vitamin B12 deficiency. In the Netherlands, that would mean tens of thousands of children. A vitamin B12 deficiency in children can lead to:
- Intrauterine growth restriction

B12 is necessary for maintaining the myelin sheaths, the insulating layers around the nerve bundles. Damaged myelin sheaths (sometimes permanently) cause paresthesia symptoms. These are tingling sensations, “pins and needles ” in the toes and the feet, and later in the fingers. Sometimes the tingling lessens during sleep, but after awakening it starts again and the patient feels as if “the body coming back to life”.

- High sensitivity, because the entire nervous system is affected by a vitamin B12 deficiency: the soft fatty material (myelin) that envelops and protects our nerves is damaged (demyelination).
This is comparable to stripping an electric wire. It leads to all sorts of “strange” symptoms and “tingling”, and pain in the arms and legs, etc., and also leads to extreme sensitivity to stimuli, sounds, light, moods and “energies” of other people. Patients are very touchy, vulnerable, easily frightened. Also leads to greater exhaustion and irritability.

- Alzheimer’s (including early-onset); a daily dose of vitamin B12 lowers the risk of early dementia and Alzheimer’s by 30 percent, according to research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Researchers followed 1648 seniors between the ages of 65 and 90 over a period of 10 years. Vitamin B12 has the property to drastically lower a high and harmful homocysteine level. This decreases the amount of cardiovascular damage and brain damage with increasing age.

Cardiovascular problems
A vitamin B12 deficiency leads to elevated homocysteine values. Elevated homocysteine values are a large risk factor for cardiovascular disease (comparable to high cholesterol).
- Pernicious anaemia
Wikipedia: “Pernicious anaemia is a type of macrocytic anaemia. This means red blood cells are enlarged. Vitamin B12, one of the essential parts for the synthesis of haemoglobin, is missing. Absorption of vitamin B12 takes place in the last part of the small intestine. Before this process can take place, vitamin B12 has to be attached to the intrinsic factor, which is produced by the stomach wall. Because of an autoimmune reaction against the stomach’s parietal cells, the production of intrinsic factor is disrupted and vitamin B12 cannot be absorbed by the body”.

- Elevated homocysteine levels, as a result of a vitamin B12 deficiency. Homocysteine is a potentially dangerous amino acid. When homocysteine accumulates in the bloodstream, the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke and blood clots increases significantly. A high homocysteine level can damage blood vessels and help cause atherosclerosis with a increased risk of heart attacks and strokes (developed in a relatively short time).

Other signs and symptoms
- Tiredness (somnolence), sleepiness, overall weakness; simply no energy, being in bad shape, signs of exhaustion (“waking up tired”). Also related to this: easily brought to tears and getting emotional, no longer being resistant to stress, being stressed out, burned out, exhausted, literally floored. Typical quote from a “vitamin B12 patient”: “I really feel like a geriatric in a young body” (many health complaints that are linked to old age are actually typical vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms).

Babies and children
Symptoms listed below are also part of the overall symptoms list, but here references to research that has been done with regards to children are listed.
If a woman has a vitamin B12 deficiency, it is very likely that her baby will also have a vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 is passed on during foetal development and through breast milk.
It is estimated that 2 to 5% of all children suffer from a vitamin B12 deficiency. In the Netherlands, that would mean tens of thousands of children. A vitamin B12 deficiency in children can lead to:

B12 is op meerdere momenten belangrijk tijdens de zwangerschap. Zo speelt deze vitamine een rol bij de rijping van het slaap-waakritme in de hersenen van de baby. Die rijping begint in de baarmoeder en gaat na de geboorte nog enkele maanden door.
